Do you experience widespread pain with no clear origin? Are you feeling stressed, tired and like you’re in a constant state of brain fog? If you’ve tried reaching out for help, you may have had your symptoms dismissed as “all in your head” or just a mental health issue. Many doctors prescribe pain medications and do little else to help. You may ask yourself, “How long will I have to take this? Is this medication safe?”

Even though more physicians are becoming aware of fibromyalgia, many still don’t know how to treat it properly. At Vitality Hub, we want to help you understand fibromyalgia and how to relieve your symptoms without pain pills or other band-aid solutions.

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that characteristically involves pain, fatigue, sleep struggles and often depression. The main criteria for diagnosis include the duration of the symptoms and experiencing pain or tenderness in 11 of the 18 identified trigger points in the body. It can also include screening for other conditions potentially causing the symptoms and ruling them out.

What Treatments Are Available?

The common treatments offered by conventional medicine doctors are prescription drugs, such as beta- blockers, antidepressants, muscle relaxers, and narcotics or other pain medications. These medications do not address the underlying causes of fibromyalgia, and they may even worsen the dysfunctional parts of your metabolism that contribute to the pain and fatigue in the first place.

Functional medicine instead approaches fibromyalgia by addressing the four main components of symptom resolution:

  1. Addressing hypothyroidism: The majority of fibromyalgia patients have an underactive thyroid.
  2. Supporting mitochondria: Mitochondria produce your cellular energy, and when they aren’t working well, you feel tired.
  3. Safe movement: Movement is necessary, but it can be easy to overdo exercise when you have fibromyalgia. Determining your sweet spot will keep you progressing.
  4. Mind-body connection: We can help restore your mind-body neurological connections with various therapies, such as stress management, chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, massage, supplements and other options.
